My research activities are principally concerned with the properties of open quantum systems, in particular non-Markovian systems, the use of the quantum trajectory method, quantum measurement theory, and quantum Brownian motion.
In more detail, the problems of current interest are as follows:
  1. Developing an alternative method of deriving Markovian master equations from microscopic models that are a priori guaranteed to be of the required Lindblad form;
  2. Studying the roles of coarse-graining in constructing physically acceptable master equations, with particular application to studying open systems interacting with thermal reservoirs;
  3. Studying the thermodynamic properties of quantum systems coupled to thermal reservoirs at different temperatures;
  4. Deriving the general non-Markovian master equation of a system subject to classical noise. The method used is closely related to the stochastic Liouville equation method of Kubo and makes use of Zwanzig-Nakajima projection operator techniques to derive the non-Markovian master equation. Applications to a two level atom in a noisy laser field, to qubits in fluctuating magnetic fields and to stochastic resonance problems in quantum dots are under consideration.
